Tryouts

As the region grows, the tryout process (and recruitment of players) is becoming a larger issue.

  1. How many different clubs did you tryout with this season?

Tournaments - Division Size

How many teams should we have in a division (this affects competitiveness of division - fewer teams closer competition, number of rounds in playoffs - more pools mean more playoff matches, and ability to fit into different locations - not that many places with 4 or more courts)?

Tournaments - Format

Should the region use 4 team pools for all divisions (even if it means that we have some divisions - on a rotating basis - playing on Sundays each weekend) and play matches (2/3) and start at 0-0?

Should the region use 5 team pools for divisions below Platinum?

If there are not enough facilities, should the region go to 5 team pools or put teams on a waiting list?

4 team pools

This year the region used 4 team pools in the Platinum Division with extended playoff format (whenever possible).

Should the region continue to use 4 team pools?

5 team pools

When the region has to use a 5 team pool (either to accommodate all teams that want to play or due to a team dropping out of a tournament), what format should the region use (see table below to see estimated impact for each format)?

Format Est. length of match - 2 sets/3 sets # hours Est. end of pool play
Modified 5 team 50 minutes/65 minutes 8 5 PM
Play 2/3 match, start at 0-0 50 minutes/65 minutes 10 7 PM
Play 2/3 match, start at 5-5 40 minutes/55 minutes 8 5 PM
Play 2/3 match, start at 7-7 36 minutes/51 minutes 7.25 4:15 PM
Play 2 sets, start at 0-0 50  minutes 8.34 5:30 PM
Play 2 sets, start at 5-5 40 minutes 6.67 3:45 PM
Play 2 sets, start at 7-7 36 minutes 6 3 PM

Officiating

New this year the Region developed an online scorekeeper and referee re-cert clinic (for adult or junior players who had been certified each of the last two seasons as well as junior coaches) which presented some material and then had a quiz.  You had to pass the quiz to move to the next section of the clinic.  If you did not pass, it took you back to review that section and take the quiz again.  We had over 300 people participate this year.

  1. Should we continue to use this online clinic?
  2. Rate the performance of the adult officials (as a whole) with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
  3. During pool play are the adult officials making the calls (or getting the player to make the call) when a call is missed?
  4. When there are enough referees should the adult referees officiate all play (not just playoffs) in the Platinum Divisions (this might be a higher entry fee)?
  5. The last two years at least one coach on the roster was required to be a certified referee.  Should we continue this requirement?

Participant/Spectator Behavior

Unfortunately, parent/spectator (and some coaches and players) behavior is becoming more of an issue.  The past few seasons we have made presentations about Honoring the Game to coaches and at officials (adult and junior) clinics.  Based on the 2006 survey results the Region developed a  Participant/Spectator Behavior Policy.

  1. Were you aware of the new Participant/Spectator Behavior policy?
  2. If you were aware, how did you find out about it?
  3. Do you feel that the policy is working?
  4. Do you have any suggestions or comments about the Participant/Spectator Behavior Policy or about poor behavior and/or how to deal with it?

Developing boy's volleyball

The past couple of years has seen the addition of a couple of boy's programs.  Please support the areas that have programs for boys in Cary, Chapel Hill, Hickory and Raleigh.  One way you can support them is to refer boys who want to play to their programs if you are not able to for a boys team in your area.

Does your area have a program for boys?

If no, would you be interested in starting a program for boys in your area?

What are the issues that are deterrents to boys playing USA Volleyball)?

  1. Would you be interested in information on how to start/run a program?

If yes, who should we get in touch with (name and contact information)?

Coaches

It is time for the Region to host another CAP Level I and Level II clinic this year (the last one was September 30 - October 2, 2005).  We are committed to helping provide you with the training and resources to allow you to help your players be the best they can be.

  1. When is the best time to hold the clinic (select all that would work for you)?

First Choice , Second Choice , Third Choice

  1. The IMPACT clinic is a requirement to coach in the region and at Qualifiers and Nationals and there are certain things that must be taught there.  Are there things that were taught or that you wish had been covered in the IMPACT clinic that you feel would be beneficial for new coaches?
