Tournaments - Geographic Location

With the growth of juniors in the region, should the region consider dividing the region into east and west and hold one tournament a month by geographic location (east and west) so teams on the edges of the region do not have to travel as much?  For example:  once a month there would be an eastern and a western location of the Gold/Silver and Bronze/Copper divisions in each age group which would be closer to the teams in the east and the west and teams in the central part of the region could decide which tournament to attend.

Tournaments - Regional Championships

This year we had all division's Regional Championships at the same time (previously the Silver, Bronze and Copper divisions ended around the middle to end of March).

  1. Should we continue to hold the Regional Championships for all divisions at the same time (like this year) instead of staggering them (like years past)?
  2. When should the Regional Championships for your division be held?
  3. Should we hold the Regional Championship for the older divisions on Sunday due to conflicts with proms?    If yes. what age group(s)?
  4. Should the Regional Championships be a one day or two day event?
  5. Should the Regional Championships be held in a convention center setting (like qualifiers) with all teams competing in one location?

Tournaments - National bids

In previous years we determined the Regional Championship and national tournament bids at the Regional Championships.  Teams that were not interested in competing for the bid had an impact on who got the bid.  Last year we separated the Regional Championships from the bid tournament so that only the teams who wanted to go to nationals were playing.

  1. Should we continue to separate these tournaments?
  2. When should the tournament that decides the Region's bids to nationals be held?
  3. Should we hold the national bid tournament for the older divisions on Sunday due to conflicts with proms?    If yes. what age group(s)?

Tournaments - Geographic Location

With the growth of juniors in the region, should the region hold one tournament a month by division (like we currently do) located in the central part of the region and another tournament a month by location so teams on the edges of the region do not have to travel as much?  For example:  once a month there would be an eastern and a western location of the Gold/Silver and Bronze/Copper divisions in each age group which would be closer to the teams in the east and the west and teams in the central part of the region could decide which tournament to attend.

Tournaments - Division Size

How many teams should we have in a division (this affects competitiveness of division, number of rounds in playoffs, and ability to fit into different locations)?

Tournaments - Format

  1. This year the region used 4 team pools in the Platinum Division with extended playoff format (whenever possible).  Should the region continue to do this?
  2.  Should the region do this for all divisions (even if it means that we have some divisions - on a rotating basis - playing on Sundays each tournament) and play matches (2/3) and start at 0-0.  (If there are not enough facilities, we may have to go to 5 team pools or have teams on a waiting list).

If yes, (4 team pools) how should the playoffs be set up?

If no, or when we have a 5 team pool, which format should we use?

  3. Should the region use 5 team pools where everyone plays everyone two sets to 25 for some of the divisions?

If yes, which divisions (select all that apply)?  Gold, Silver, Bronze or Copper.

Officiating

New this year the Region developed an online scorekeeper and referee re-cert clinic (for adult or junior players who had been certified each of the last two seasons as well as junior coaches) which presented some material and then had a quiz.  You had to pass the quiz to move to the next section of the clinic.  If you did not pass, it took you back to review that section and take the quiz again.  We had over 300 people participate this year.

  1. Should we continue to use this online clinic?
  2. Rate the performance of the adult officials (as a whole) with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.
  3. During pool play are the adult officials making the calls (or getting the player to make the call) when a call is missed?
  4. When there are enough referees should the adult referees officiate all play (not just playoffs) in the Platinum Divisions (this might be a higher entry fee)?
  5. The last two years at least one coach on the roster was required to be a certified referee.  Should we continue this requirement?

Region Recognition - All Tournament Team

The Region has always made an effort to recognize the talented players in the Region.  This has taken several forms over the years and all methods have had poor participation in the selection process.  Based on feedback from the 2006 survey the All Region Team was replaced with the All Tournament Team.  An All Tournament Team was selected  with 3 players from the Championship Team, 2 from the runner-up and one each from the teams that lost in the semi-finals.  A Tournament MVP is also selected.  The coaches and referees are responsible for the selection.

  1. Did you feel that the All Tournament Team accurately represented your division?

    If not, why not?

  1. Enter suggestions for the All Tournament selection process below.

Team Movement

The Region strives to make the divisions as fair and competitive as possible.  For the first three tournaments, we automatically moved the top two teams in the points standings up and bottom two down (except for first tournament where more, less, or none were moved in order to balance division sizes).  Do you have any suggestions regarding team movement?

Points System

We use a points system that to determine which teams went into divisions.

  1. Did you like the points system?
  2. Right now, teams that play outside the region do not earn any points and it is possible for some of the stronger teams to be seeded lower than their level of play.  Should the points system attempt to take out of region play into consideration?
  3. Do you have any suggestions or comments about the points system?

Participant/Spectator Behavior

Unfortunately, parent/spectator (and some coaches and players) behavior is becoming more of an issue.  The past few seasons we have made presentations about Honoring the Game to coaches and at officials (adult and junior) clinics.  Based on the 2006 survey results the Region developed a  Participant/Spectator Behavior Policy.

  1. Were you aware of the new Participant/Spectator Behavior policy?
  2. Do you feel that the policy is working?
  3. Do you have any suggestions or comments about the Participant/Spectator Behavior Policy or about poor behavior and/or how to deal with it?

Developing boy's volleyball

The past couple of years has seen the addition of a couple of boy's programs.  Please support the areas that have programs for boys in Cary, Chapel Hill, Hickory and Raleigh.  One way you can support them is to refer boys who want to play to their programs if you are not able to for a boys team in your area.

  1. Does your area have a program for boys?             If no, would you be interested in starting a program for boys in your area?
  2. What are the issues that are deterrents to boys playing USA Volleyball)?

  3. Would you be interested in information on how to start/run a program?

If yes, who should we get in touch with (name and contact information)?

Coaches

It is time for the Region to host another CAP Level I and Level II clinic this year (the last one was September 30 - October 2, 2005).  We are committed to helping provide you with the training and resources to allow you to help your players be the best they can be.

  1. When is the best time to hold the clinic (select all that would work for you)?

First Choice , Second Choice , Third Choice

  1. The IMPACT clinic is a requirement to coach in the region and at Qualifiers and Nationals and there are certain things that must be taught there.  Are there things that were taught or that you wish had been covered in the IMPACT clinic that you feel would be beneficial for new coaches?
