Mental checklist for setters
- Memorize the terminology, symbols, and signals of the
offense.
- Rank each hitter by position (OH, MH, OP).
- Identify any special considerations for each hitter.
(Do they have trouble with their approach on the off-hand side, need more time
transitioning off the net, hit better when the set is off the net, etc.)?
Include cues that you can use to help them improve their hitting.
- Rank each hitter by her ability to hit the following
sets:
- High sets (4 or 5 tempo).
- Medium sets (3 tempo).
- Low sets (2 tempo).
- Quick sets (1 tempo).
- Slides.
- Back row.
- Combination sets (X’s, double quick, stack, tandem,
inside-out approach).
- Which hitters can be set after they have made an error
(blocked or botch)?
- Which hitters need to be set after they have made an
error (blocked or botch)?
- Which hitters cannot be set after they have made an
error (blocked or botch)?
- Who would you set in each of the following situations
and why?
- We need a side-out (serve receive).
- We need a point (serving).
- We need the ball kept in play (they may not have as
many kills, but have fewer errors).
- List your starting lineup, including key subs.
- For each rotation, rank at least three serve receive
plays beginning with what you feel is the most effective and why.
- Rotation 1.
- Rotation 2.
- Rotation 3.
- Rotation 4.
- Rotation 5.
- Rotation 6.
- For each rotation, rank at least three free ball plays
beginning with what you feel is the most effective and why.
- Rotation 1.
