Individual Skills
Passing Keys
Slight right foot lead (toward target) or feet parallel.
Platform.
Platform and ball away from body.
Platform and feet toward target.
No arm swing (use legs).
Finish with step toward target.
Low zone.
Setting Keys
Get to net before ball is passed/dug.
Face passer (so first step can be toward ball).
Early window (get hands up early).
Shape hands to ball.
Window just above hairline on forehead.
Window goes up just before last step.
Right foot lead.
Extend/push the ball away.
Serving Keys
Shelf hand in front of hitting shoulder.
Elbow high (above shoulder).
Lift (not throw) the ball in front of hitting shoulder.
Step forward with foot opposite hitting hand on contact of the ball.
Spiking Keys
Face crosscourt corner, approach at angle, open to setter.
Approach footwork.
3 steps - 1st step with opposite side as hitting shoulder.
4 steps - 1st step with same side as hitting shoulder.
Right-hander's last 2 steps are right - left.
Left-hander’s last 2 steps are left - right.
Swing both arms up, palms up as you jump, think quick jump.
Hitting elbow stays up. Opposite hand points to the ball.
Hand comes over the ball (throw hand through the ball).
To hit the ball hard, the hand and forearm must be loose, think quick rather than hard.
Hit the ball hard in the back 10 feet of the court.
Blocking Keys
Measure.
1st measure is arms length from net (attack overpass).
2nd measure is elbows length from net (once ball is not an overpass).
Watch setter’s hands to see where the ball is going and then find the hitter.
Turn hips to move (keeps you out of net).
Hands stay at chest height (middle hitters even higher).
Shoot hands over net (get hands over net and into path of ball as quickly as possible).
